Writing Prayers
Format
You can use an existing prayer or model to as a blue print for how to build your prayer.
- How could you put something as familiar as the Lord’s Prayer or Psalm 23 into your own words so it reflects your experience today?
- The “Five-Finger” prayer model was written by the former Cardinal Bergoglio, more commonly known today as Pope Francis. Your thumb, the closest finger to you, reminds you to pray for those close to you: family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors. The pointer finger is for teachers or those who provide you direction. The index finger, the tallest finger, is for those who govern or exercise power. The ring finger, being less dexterous, reminds us to pray for the weak, sick, poor, and suffering. And the pinky reminds us to pray for ourselves.
- The ACTS prayer model is an acronym for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication.
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father who is in heaven
Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
