The Great Bible
1566 edition

Pages displayed: 1 Corinthians 15 - 2 Corinthians 1:1

On loan from Dr. Dan Doriani.

The section of the Great Bible displayed here is believed to be from the 1566 edition printed in Rouen, France. Originally published in 1539, the Great Bible is an English translation produced by Miles Coverdale. It relied on William Tyndale’s English New Testament (1526) and John Rogers’ Matthew’s Bible (1537). The Great Bible was the first English translation authorized for use in the Church of England. While it was eventually superseded as the “authorized” English translation by the King James Version in 1611, the Great Bible holds an important place in the history of the reformation of the English church under Henry VIII. The final edition of the Great Bible was published in 1569.
