Effective Online Learning

This guide offers some practical advice as well as resources for deeper reflection on the online learning process.

Tips for Online Learning

Stay connected. Find a virtual study buddy. Agree to exchange class work goals, challenges, and progress every 2-3 days.

Block off regular time for class work—especially if your class is now asynchronous. Routine can help you maintain motivation.

Connect with The Scribe Writing Center by making an online appointment. Processing your work verbally can give you motivation, clarity, and strategy.

Zoom Etiquette

  • When you join a meeting, use the Zoom prompt to test your microphone and speakers.
  • Mute yourself to lower background noise for other participants. Unmute yourself to speak.

Connect with Canvas

Turn on Canvas notifications. Click on "Account" in the left-hand menu to access Notification settings. Make sure you are receiving announcements on a daily basis and remember to check your email.

Online Exams and Quizzes

  • Know the due date/time and get set-up early.
  • Read instructions carefully.
  • If possible, use a hardwired internet connection instead of wireless for stability.
  • Use a desktop or laptop computer, not a tablet or smartphone.
  • Disable pop-up blockers.
  • Close all browser tabs other than Canvas.
  • Do not navigate away from the exam/quiz.
  • Do not use your browser's "Back" button to navigate.

Be Still

Take time before and after your work to ask the Lord for the peace, humility, and steadfastness to engage and accept the opportunities for learning and growth He has provided you. Notice when distractions and circumstances you did not choose are difficult and grieving. Notice when you receive comfort from unexpected places. Take time for lament and for praise.
