APA Citation Guide

This citation guide is based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.) and should be used for papers in the Counseling classes at Covenant Theological Seminary.

Reference Lists

Formatting Reference Lists

  • Begin the reference list on a new page after the text.
  • Place the section label “References” in bold at the top of the page, centered.
  • Order the reference list entries alphabetically by author’s last names.
  • Double-space the entire reference list (both within and between entries).
  • Apply a hanging indent of 0.5 inches to each reference list entry (i.e. the first line of the reference should be flush left and subsequent lines are indented 0.5 inches from the left margin).
  • All entries conclude with a period unless they conclude with a DOI or URL. In those cases, the period precedes the DOI or URL.

Formatting Titles in a Reference List

  • For chapters and articles (works part of a greater whole), use sentence case capitalization.
  • For books or journals (for works that stand alone), italicize the title and use sentence case capitalization.
  • Place edition statements in parentheses: (9th ed.). Do not italicize the parenthetical information.
